ALBUM REVIEW: The Retrospective All-Stars Vol. 1

After 7 EPs, the Kensal Rise-based Retrospective fold are set to deliver their first long-player on May the 7th. Since launching in January 2011, the boutique imprint has largely utilised Soundcloud to push its releases. Upon doing this, label boss Ra (from Ruben and Ra notoriety) soon discovered a vibrant yet largely unconnected community of other boogie-orienated producers. A Spanish edit-smith going by the name of Rayko was promptly signed to Retrospective for the label’s 3rd 12”, before the little known Montenegrin national Fil Lavin became the second recruit two months later, but behind the scenes there was more deals being made with Ra intent on bringing this wealth of unconnected talent together on a larger scale. The result of this 9 month endeavour is a triple-pack vinyl release entitled ‘The Retrospective All-Stars Vol. 1’. The 22 year-old Argentine Toomy Disco kicks off proceedings with an acid-laced house cut entitled ‘Peppermint’, which goes someway to explaining why he’s widely tipped to be the likely successor to Todd Terje when it’s time for the nu-disco baton to be passed on to a new generation. Following what was a decent EP for the label back in December, Fil Lavin’s deep groover ‘Love Is Gone' marks another highpoint, with Ruben & Ra's Miami Vice-esque 'Do It' and 'Doing Alright' by the Edinburgh-based 78 Edits (aka Jamie Buchanan) also both being of note. Elsewhere, there’s less engaging material, but for the most part, Retrospective All-Stars Vol.1 does what Ra set out to do, and that’s to successfully unite and promote the wealth of up-and-coming nu-disco producers using Soundcloud.
