NEW YORK WEEKEND PICK: Basic NYC Present Jeff Mills

Having considered opting for Addison Groove and Doc Deneeka at the Glasslands Gallery in Williamsburg for this week’s New York event pick, we eventually decided to change it up a little and chose the Basic NYC party with the living legend that is Jeff Mills. Since ‘82, Mills and his Axis Records imprint has been almost-entirely unshaped by trends in techno. Creatively speaking, whether this is a good or a bad thing is a matter of debate for another time, but it’s certainly a unique stance in a genre that has largely evolved over the past two decades through the medium of new sub-genres. In order to celebrate the passing of the label’s 20th anniversary, the increasingly ageless icon (who’s 50 next year) will be returning to Le Poisson Rouge (where he played in December) this coming Saturday. After an opening spin by the resident, they’ll be a warm up hour from Sleepy & Boo, before Mills takes to the decks for an extended set that ominously finishes “late”. Gramercy Williams
