Album Review: Motor City Drum Ensemble - DJ-Kicks

Danilo Plessow, (a.k.a. Motor City Drum Ensemble) heralds from Schwäbisch Gmünd (near Stuttgart) and is living proof, if any were needed, that the best electronic music tends to come from big car manufacturing cities. Respectfully nodding to both Detroit and Germany’s own home of automotive manufacturing - Stuttgart (Mercedes, Porsche, Bosch) - Plessow’s moniker Motor City Drum Ensemble (MCDE) encapsulates the sound and influence automation had on house music. MCDE’s first official mix encapsulates this further still, bringing African American roots of early house music and experimental jazz influences of its more alternative edge into a journey that touches at the core of the musical genre. Some tracks have been edited, including Bad Jazz Troupe - Breakdown Treat (Dusty Rework) and Plessow’s own track, a Motor City Drum Ensemble exclusive release - L.O.V.E, which create a specific sound that bridges experimental elements of jazz within its manifestation of deep house. Electronic music producers such as Fred P, Robert Hood and Richard D James sit next to European jazz musicians such as Timo Lassy and Pete Isaac, maintaining an intensity and clear pace that runs right the way through, melding each track and creating a visceral exploration of house in its contemporary forms, all underpinned by Plessow’s love of jazz. This mix is a valuable contribution to the DJ Kicks series.
